De Stijl Police Boundary, 1998

Plywood, police boundary
106 x 72 x 55 cm

This piece appropriates a De Stijl chair design by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888–1964), but uses primary colors rather than the original gray tones. For the blue tone, I used pieces of an NYPD police boundary, which is intended for traffic and crowd control. De Stijl Police Boundary combines Modernist design meant to bridge the boundary between life and art, and a boundary explicitly made to exercise control.
