Jan van Eyck Rietveld Chairs, 2004

Three Rietveld chairs: wood
Dimensions variable

The simple chairs designed by Gerrit Rietveld found at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, The Netherlands, blend in with the background of the institution. The modular designs, however, represent a modernist ideal of democratic utility.

I took apart three of the Rietveld chairs from the school's lounge, playfully reconfigured them into "sculptures," and exhibited them in the gallery space for a week. Afterwards, I restored the chairs to their original form and left them in the space to be returned to the lounge by the cleaning staff.
